[52] Bhikkhus, in saying "a heap of the unwholesome (akusalarāsi)," it is of the five hindrances (nīvaraṇa) that one would rightly speak; for this, bhikkhus, is a heap of the unwholesome in its entirety, namely, the five hindrances. What five? The hindrance of sensual desire, the hindrance of ill will, the hindrance of dullness and drowsiness, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse, and the hindrance of doubt. Bhikkhus, in saying "a heap of the unwholesome," it is of these five hindrances that one would rightly speak; for this, bhikkhus, is a heap of the unwholesome in its entirety, namely, these five hindrances.
