[72] Bhikkhus, these five dhammas, when developed and cultivated, have liberation of mind (cetovimutti) as their fruit and as their benefit in fruit, and have liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti) as their fruit and as their benefit in fruit. What five? The perception of impermanence, the perception of suffering (dukkha) in what is impermanent, the perception of non-self in what is suffering, the perception of abandonment, and the perception of dispassion. These, bhikkhus, are the five dhammas which, when developed and cultivated, have liberation of mind as their fruit and as their benefit in fruit, and have liberation by wisdom as their fruit and as their benefit in fruit. When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is liberated in mind and liberated by wisdom, this bhikkhu is called one who has lifted the cross-bar, and also one who has filled in the moat, and also one who has pulled up the pillar, and also one who has withdrawn the bolt, and also a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is unfettered. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has lifted the cross-bar? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned ignorance (avijjā), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, brought it to non-existence, so that it is not subject to arising in the future. Thus, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has lifted the cross-bar. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has filled in the moat? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the round of birth (jātisaṃsāra) that leads to renewed existence, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, brought it to non-existence, so that it is not subject to arising in the future. Thus, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has filled in the moat. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has pulled up the pillar? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned craving (taṇhā), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, brought it to non-existence, so that it is not subject to arising in the future. Thus, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has pulled up the pillar. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has withdrawn the bolt? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the five lower fetters (saṃyojana), cut them off at the root, made them like palm stumps, brought them to non-existence, so that they are not subject to arising in the future. Thus, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has withdrawn the bolt. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is unfettered? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the conceit 'I am' (asmimāna), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, brought it to non-existence, so that it is not subject to arising in the future. Thus, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is unfettered.
