[105] Bhikkhus, there are these eight stains (mala). What eight? Sacred texts (mantā) have non-recitation as their stain, bhikkhus; houses have non-maintenance as their stain, bhikkhus; laziness, bhikkhus, is the stain of beauty of complexion (vaṇṇa); heedlessness (pamāda), bhikkhus, is the stain of one who guards; misconduct (duccarita), bhikkhus, is the stain of a woman; stinginess (macchariya), bhikkhus, is the stain of a giver; evil, unwholesome dhammas, bhikkhus, are stains both in this world and in the next; and a stain worse than these stains, bhikkhus — ignorance (avijjā) is the supreme stain. These, bhikkhus, are the eight stains.
