[206] Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One; having approached, … the Blessed One … Sitting to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "'Accomplished in supports (nissayasampanna), accomplished in supports,' venerable sir, it is said. In what way, venerable sir, is a bhikkhu accomplished in supports?"
"If, relying on faith (saddhā), a bhikkhu abandons the unwholesome (akusala) and develops the wholesome (kusala), that unwholesome is indeed abandoned by him. If relying on moral shame (hiri), if relying on moral dread (ottappa), if relying on energy (vīriya), if relying on wisdom (paññā), a bhikkhu abandons the unwholesome and develops the wholesome, that unwholesome is indeed abandoned by him. For that unwholesome is abandoned by that bhikkhu, well abandoned, since it was abandoned after being seen with noble wisdom. And, Bhikkhus, established upon these five dhammas, that bhikkhu should dwell with four supports (upanissaya). What four? Here, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, having reflected, uses one thing; having reflected, endures one thing; having reflected, avoids one thing; having reflected, dispels one thing. Thus indeed, Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is accomplished in supports."
