[218] Then the Venerable Samiddhi approached the Venerable Sāriputta; having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Sāriputta and sat down to one side. As the Venerable Samiddhi was sitting to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to him: "Samiddhi, with what as their object do a person's thoughts of intention (saṅkappavitakkā) arise?"
"With name-and-form (nāmarūpa) as their object, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, where do they take on diversity?"
"In the elements (dhātu), venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, what is their origin?"
"They have contact (phassa) as their origin, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, upon what do they converge?"
"They converge upon feeling (vedanā), venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, what stands at their head?"
"Concentration (samādhi) stands at their head, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, what has dominion over them?"
"Mindfulness has dominion over them, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, what is supreme among them?"
"Wisdom (paññā) is supreme among them, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, what is their essence?"
"Liberation (vimutti) is their essence, venerable sir."
"But, Samiddhi, in what do they culminate?"
"They culminate in the Deathless (amata), venerable sir."
"Samiddhi, when asked, 'With what as their object do a person's thoughts of intention arise?' you said, 'With name-and-form as their object, venerable sir.' When asked, 'But, Samiddhi, where do they take on diversity?' you said, 'In the elements, venerable sir.' When asked, 'But, Samiddhi, what is their origin?' you said, 'They have contact as their origin, venerable sir.' "Good, good, Samiddhi! It is good indeed, Samiddhi, that when asked the question you have answered it; but do not become conceited on account of that."
