[22] Bhikkhus, I will teach you seven principles of non-decline (aparihāniyā dhammā) … And what, bhikkhus, are the seven principles of non-decline? As long as bhikkhus do not delight in work [1], are not devoted to delighting in work, growth alone is to be expected for the bhikkhus, not decline. As long as bhikkhus do not delight in talk … do not delight in sleep, do not delight in company, do not have evil desires (pāpicchā), do not come under the sway of evil desires, do not have evil friends (pāpamittā), do not have evil companions, are not devoted to evil, and do not stop short midway upon some minor attainment of distinction, growth alone is to be expected for the bhikkhus, not decline. As long, bhikkhus, as these seven principles of non-decline remain established among the bhikkhus, and the bhikkhus are seen to abide in these seven principles of non-decline, growth alone is to be expected for the bhikkhus, not decline.
