[227] "Bhikkhus, I will teach the nine dhammas rooted in craving (taṇhā). Listen to it. … And what, bhikkhus, are the nine dhammas rooted in craving? In dependence on craving there is seeking (pariyesanā); in dependence on seeking, gain (lābha); in dependence on gain, appraisal (vinicchaya); in dependence on appraisal, desire and lust (chandarāga); in dependence on desire and lust, attachment (ajjhosāna); in dependence on attachment, possessiveness (pariggaha); in dependence on possessiveness, stinginess (macchariya); in dependence on stinginess, safeguarding (ārakkha); and with safeguarding as the cause, there come into being many evil, unwholesome dhammas — the taking up of clubs and the taking up of weapons, quarrels, contention, and disputes, insolent talk of 'you! you!', malicious speech, and false speech. These, bhikkhus, are the nine dhammas rooted in craving."
