[249] "'One liberated in both ways (ubhatobhāgavimutta), one liberated in both ways,' friend, it is said. In what way, friend, has one liberated in both ways been declared by the Blessed One?"
"Here, friend, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the first jhāna; and in whatever way that base (āyatana) is, in that very way he dwells having touched it with the body, and he understands it with wisdom (paññā). To this extent too, friend, one liberated in both ways has been declared by the Blessed One — in a provisional sense (pariyāyena) …
"Again, friend, a bhikkhu, by completely surmounting the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana), enters and dwells in the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha), and, having seen with wisdom, his taints (āsava) are utterly destroyed; and in whatever way that base is, in that very way he dwells having touched it with the body, and he understands it with wisdom. To this extent too, friend, one liberated in both ways has been declared by the Blessed One — in the definitive sense (nippariyāyena)."
