[278] Bhikkhus, there are these five bonds of the mind (cetaso vinibandha). What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not devoid of lust for sensual pleasures … These, bhikkhus, are the five bonds of the mind. Bhikkhus, for the abandoning of these five bonds of the mind, the four right exertions (sammappadhāna) should be developed. What four? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu generates desire (chanda), strives, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and endeavours for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome states that have not yet arisen; … for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome states that have arisen; … for the arising of wholesome states that have not yet arisen; … he generates desire, strives, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and endeavours for the persistence, non-confusion, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome states that have arisen. Bhikkhus, for the abandoning of these five bonds of the mind, these four right exertions should be developed.
