[34] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of seven qualities should be resorted to, associated with, and attended upon as a friend, even if one is being rebuffed. What seven? He is dear (piya) and agreeable (manāpa); he is respected (garu); he is esteemed (bhāvanīya); he is a speaker (vattā); he is patient with speech (vacanakkhama); he gives talk that is deep; and he does not enjoin one in what is groundless. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these seven qualities should be resorted to, associated with, and attended upon as a friend, even if one is being rebuffed.
Dear and respected, esteemed,
a speaker, and patient with speech,
one who gives talk that is deep,
who would not enjoin one in what is groundless —
the person here in whom these qualities are found
is a friend for one who desires a friend,
compassionate and desiring one's welfare;
such a one should be associated with,
even if one is being expelled.
