[48] "Bhikkhus, I will teach you an exposition of the Dhamma (dhammapariyāya) on bondage and release (saññoga-visaññoga). Listen to it and attend closely; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, bhikkhus, is the exposition of the Dhamma on bondage and release? A woman, bhikkhus, attends inwardly to the femininity faculty (itthindriya) — to feminine behavior, feminine appearance, feminine ways, feminine desire, feminine voice, feminine adornment. She becomes impassioned by these and takes delight in them. Impassioned by them, delighting in them, she attends outwardly to the masculinity faculty (purisindriya) — to masculine behavior, masculine appearance, masculine ways, masculine desire, masculine voice, masculine adornment. She becomes impassioned by these and takes delight in them. Impassioned by them, delighting in them, she desires bondage externally, and she desires the pleasure and joy that arise conditioned by that bondage. Beings who delight in their femininity, bhikkhus, have entered upon bondage with men. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a woman does not transcend her femininity. "A man, bhikkhus, attends inwardly to the masculinity faculty — to masculine behavior, masculine appearance, masculine ways, masculine desire, masculine voice, masculine adornment. He becomes impassioned by these and takes delight in them. Impassioned by them, delighting in them, he attends outwardly to the femininity faculty — to feminine behavior, feminine appearance, feminine ways, feminine desire, feminine voice, feminine adornment. Beings who delight in their masculinity, bhikkhus, have entered upon bondage with women. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a man does not transcend his masculinity. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that there is bondage. "And how, bhikkhus, is there release? A woman, bhikkhus, does not attend inwardly to the femininity faculty — to feminine behavior, feminine appearance, feminine ways, feminine desire, feminine voice, feminine adornment. She does not become impassioned by these, nor take delight in them. Not impassioned by them, not delighting in them, she does not attend outwardly to the masculinity faculty — to masculine behavior, masculine appearance, masculine ways, masculine desire, masculine voice, masculine adornment. She does not become impassioned by these, nor take delight in them. Not impassioned by them, not delighting in them, she does not desire bondage externally, nor does she desire the pleasure and joy that arise conditioned by that bondage. Beings who do not delight in their femininity, bhikkhus, have entered upon release from men. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that a woman transcends her femininity.
