[73] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of seven qualities is an expert in the Discipline (vinayadhara). Of what seven? He knows what is an offence (āpatti); he knows what is not an offence; he knows a light offence; he knows a grave offence; both Pātimokkhas have been well transmitted to him in detail, well analyzed, fluent in recitation, well determined, both by rule (sutta) and by detailed exposition (anubyañjana); he is one who gains at will, without trouble, without difficulty, the four jhānas that pertain to the higher mind and are pleasant abidings in this very life; and with the destruction of the taints (āsava), he realizes for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, he dwells therein. Possessed of these seven qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is an expert in the Discipline.
