[109] Bhikkhus, physicians give an emetic for warding off ailments originating from bile, for warding off ailments originating from phlegm, and for warding off ailments originating from wind. That emetic exists, bhikkhus; I do not say that it does not. But that emetic, bhikkhus, sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails. But I, bhikkhus, will teach the noble emetic — an emetic that only succeeds and does not fail; an emetic in dependence on which beings subject to birth (jāti) are freed from birth, beings subject to aging (jarā) are freed from aging, beings subject to death (maraṇa) are freed from death, and beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. And what, bhikkhus, is that noble emetic that only succeeds and does not fail — the emetic in dependence on which beings subject to birth are freed from birth … beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair?
For one of right view (sammādiṭṭhi), bhikkhus, wrong view is vomited up; and the many evil, unwholesome qualities that come into being with wrong view as condition — these too are vomited up by him; and with right view as condition, many wholesome qualities reach fulfillment by development.
For one of right thought (sammāsaṅkappa), bhikkhus, wrong thought is vomited up … For one of right speech (sammāvācā), bhikkhus, wrong speech is vomited up … For one of right action (sammākammanta), bhikkhus, wrong action is vomited up … For one of right livelihood (sammā-ājīva), bhikkhus, wrong livelihood is vomited up … For one of right effort (sammāvāyāma), bhikkhus, wrong effort is vomited up … For one of right mindfulness (sammāsati), bhikkhus, wrong mindfulness is vomited up … For one of right concentration (samādhi; sammāsamādhi), bhikkhus, wrong concentration is vomited up … For one of right knowledge (ñāṇa; sammāñāṇa), bhikkhus, wrong knowledge is vomited up … For one of right deliverance (sammāvimutti), bhikkhus, wrong deliverance is vomited up; and the many evil, unwholesome qualities that come into being with wrong deliverance as condition — these too are vomited up by him; and with right deliverance as condition, many wholesome qualities reach fulfillment by development.
