[31] Then the Venerable Upāli approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Upāli said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, in dependence on how many reasons has the training rule (sikkhāpada) been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples, and the Pātimokkha recited?"
"Upāli, it is in dependence on ten reasons that the training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples and the Pātimokkha recited. What ten? For the excellence of the Saṅgha; for the comfort of the Saṅgha; for the restraint of shameless persons; for the comfortable abiding of well-behaved bhikkhus; for the restraint of taints (āsava) pertaining to this present life; for warding off taints pertaining to future lives; for inspiring confidence in those without confidence; for the increase of confidence in those already confident; for the endurance of the true Dhamma (saddhamma); for the support of the Discipline (vinaya). Upāli, it is in dependence on these ten reasons that the training rule has been laid down by the Tathāgata for his disciples and the Pātimokkha recited."
"Venerable sir, how many are the grounds for suspending the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhaṭṭhapana)?"
"Upāli, there are ten grounds for suspending the Pātimokkha. What ten? One who is pārājika is seated in that assembly; talk concerning a pārājika has been left unfinished; one not fully ordained is seated in that assembly; talk concerning one not fully ordained has been left unfinished; one who has renounced the training is seated in that assembly; talk concerning one who has renounced the training has been left unfinished; a paṇḍaka is seated in that assembly; talk concerning a paṇḍaka has been left unfinished; a corrupter of bhikkhunīs is seated in that assembly; talk concerning a corrupter of bhikkhunīs has been left unfinished. These, Upāli, are the ten grounds for suspending the Pātimokkha."
