[43] "Venerable sir, how many roots of dispute (vivādamūla) are there?"
"There are, Upāli, ten roots of dispute. What ten? Here, Upāli, bhikkhus declare what is not an offense (āpatti) to be an offense; they declare what is an offense to be no offense; they declare a light offense to be a grave offense; they declare a grave offense to be a light offense; they declare a gross offense to be an offense that is not gross; they declare an offense that is not gross to be a gross offense; they declare an offense with remainder to be an offense without remainder; they declare an offense without remainder to be an offense with remainder; they declare a remediable offense to be an irremediable offense; they declare an irremediable offense to be a remediable offense. These, Upāli, are the ten roots of dispute."
