[45] "Bhikkhus, there are these ten dangers (ādīnava) in entering the king's inner palace. What ten? Here, bhikkhus, the king is seated together with the queen consort. A bhikkhu enters there. Either the queen, seeing that bhikkhu, displays a smile, or the bhikkhu, seeing the queen, displays a smile. Then it occurs to the king thus: 'Surely these two have done something, or they will do so.' This, bhikkhus, is the first danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king, busy with many duties and many things to be done, having gone to a certain woman, does not remember it; she conceives by him. Then it occurs to the king thus: 'No one else enters here except one gone forth (pabbajita). Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the second danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, a certain jewel is lost in the king's inner palace. Then it occurs to the king thus: 'No one else enters here except one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the third danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the secret counsels within the king's inner palace are divulged outside. Then it occurs to the king thus: 'No one else enters here except one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the fourth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, in the king's inner palace the father intrigues against the son, or the son intrigues against the father. It occurs to them thus: 'No one else enters here except one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This indeed, bhikkhus, is the fifth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king appoints to a high position one who merits a low position. Those to whom this is displeasing think thus: 'The king associates closely with the one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the sixth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king appoints to a low position one who merits a high position. Those to whom this is displeasing think thus: 'The king associates closely with the one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This indeed, bhikkhus, is the seventh danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king dispatches the army at the wrong time. Those to whom this is displeasing think thus: 'The king associates closely with the one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the eighth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king, having dispatched the army at the right time, had it turn back while still on the road. Those to whom this is displeasing think thus: 'The king associates closely with the one gone forth. Could this be the doing of the one gone forth?' This, bhikkhus, is the ninth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"Again, bhikkhus, the king's inner palace is crowded with elephants, crowded with horses, crowded with chariots, and there are enticing forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tangibles, which are not suitable for one gone forth. This, bhikkhus, is the tenth danger in entering the king's inner palace.
"These, bhikkhus, are the ten dangers in entering the king's inner palace."
