[73] Bhikkhus, these ten dhammas are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. What ten? Wealth (bhoga) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Beauty (vaṇṇa) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Health (ārogya) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Virtues (sīlāni) are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. The holy life (brahmacariya) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, [and hard to obtain] in the world. Friends (mittā) are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Great learning (bāhusacca) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Wisdom (paññā) is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Dhamma is wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. Beings (sattā) are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world. These, bhikkhus, are the ten dhammas that are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world.
Bhikkhus, for these ten dhammas that are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world, there are ten dhammas that are obstacles (paripantha). Laziness and lack of exertion are an obstacle to wealth. Non-adornment and non-beautification are an obstacle to beauty. Doing what is unsuitable is an obstacle to health. Bad friendship is an obstacle to the virtues. Non-restraint of the senses is an obstacle to the holy life. Deceitfulness is an obstacle to friends. Not doing recitation is an obstacle to great learning. Unwillingness to listen and failure to question are an obstacle to wisdom. Lack of application and lack of reviewing are an obstacle to dhammas. Wrong practice is an obstacle to beings. Bhikkhus, for these ten dhammas that are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world, these ten dhammas are obstacles.
Bhikkhus, for these ten dhammas that are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world, there are ten dhammas that are nutriments (āhāra). Non-laziness and exertion are the nutriment of wealth. Adornment and beautification are the nutriment of beauty. Doing what is suitable is the nutriment of health. Good friendship (kalyāṇamittatā) is the nutriment of the virtues. Restraint of the senses (indriyasaṃvara) is the nutriment of the holy life. Non-deceitfulness is the nutriment of friends. Doing recitation is the nutriment of great learning. Willingness to listen and questioning are the nutriment of wisdom. Application and reviewing are the nutriment of dhammas. Right practice is the nutriment of beings. Bhikkhus, for these ten dhammas that are wished for, lovely, agreeable, and hard to obtain in the world, these ten dhammas are nutriments.
