[111] 2. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Then, in the evening, the Venerable Ānanda, having emerged from seclusion (paṭisallāna), approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down at one side. Seated at one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "It is wonderful, venerable sir; it is marvellous, venerable sir — how short-lived indeed, venerable sir, was the Blessed One's mother! When the Blessed One was seven days old, the Blessed One's mother passed away and was reborn in the Tusita host."
"So it is, Ānanda; so it is, Ānanda. Short-lived indeed, Ānanda, are the mothers of Bodhisattas: when Bodhisattas are seven days old, the mothers of Bodhisattas pass away and are reborn in the Tusita host."
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Whatever beings have come to be, and whatever will come to be —
all shall go on, leaving the body behind.
Understanding that all this is loss (sabbajāni), one who is skilled,
ardent (ātāpiyo), should live the holy life (brahmacariya)."
