[115] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling near Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion many young boys were catching little fish between Sāvatthī and Jeta's Grove. Then the Blessed One, having dressed in the morning, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. The Blessed One saw those many young boys catching little fish between Sāvatthī and Jeta's Grove; on seeing them, he approached those boys and, having approached, said to them: "Boys, do you fear suffering (dukkha)? Is suffering displeasing to you?"
"Yes, venerable sir, we do fear suffering; suffering is displeasing to us."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this meaning, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
If you fear suffering,
if suffering is displeasing to you,
do not do an evil deed,
whether openly or in secret;
but if you shall do an evil deed,
or are doing one now,
there is no release from suffering for you,
even though you fly up and flee.
