[127] 1. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Vesālī, in the Great Wood (Mahāvana), in the hall with the peaked roof (Kūṭāgārasālā). Then, in the morning, the Blessed One dressed and, taking bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. When he had walked for alms in Vesālī and had returned from the alms round after his meal, he addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Take the sitting cloth (nisīdana), Ānanda; we shall go[2] to the Pāvāla Shrine (cetiya)[1] for the day's abiding." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied[3] to the Blessed One, and taking the sitting cloth he followed close behind the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One approached the Pāvāla Shrine and, having approached, sat down on the seat that had been prepared. When he was seated, the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Delightful, Ānanda, is Vesālī; delightful is the Udena Shrine; delightful is the Gotamaka Shrine; delightful is the Sattamba Shrine; delightful is the Bahuputta Shrine; delightful is the Sāranda Shrine; delightful is the Pāvāla Shrine. Whoever, Ānanda, has developed the four bases for success (iddhipāda), made much of them, made them his vehicle, made them his foundation, kept them up, consolidated them, and thoroughly undertaken them — he, should he so wish, could remain for an aeon (kappa) or for the remainder of an aeon. The Tathāgata, Ānanda, has developed the four bases for success, made much of them, made them his vehicle, made them his foundation, kept them up, consolidated them, and thoroughly undertaken them. Should he so wish, Ānanda, the Tathāgata could remain for an aeon or for the remainder of an aeon."
