[135] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was seated reviewing his own many evil, unwholesome states (pāpakā akusalā dhammā) that had been abandoned, and the many wholesome states that had reached fulfillment through development (bhāvanā).
Then the Blessed One, having understood that his own many evil, unwholesome states had been abandoned and that the many wholesome states had reached fulfillment through development, at that time uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"It was before; then it was not.
It was not before; then it was.
It was not, and it will not be,
nor is it found in the present."
