[137] Then a number of bhikkhus, having dressed in the morning and taken bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. When they had walked for alms in Sāvatthī and had returned from the alms round after their meal, they approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down at one side.
Seated at one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, a number of ascetics, brahmins, and wanderers belonging to various sects are residing in Sāvatthī — holding various views, of various persuasions, of various preferences, relying for support upon their various views. There are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The world is eternal; only this is true, anything else is vain.' But there are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The world is not eternal; only this is true, anything else is vain.' There are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The world is finite; only this is true, anything else is vain.' But there are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The world is infinite; only this is true, anything else is vain.' There are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The soul (jīva) and the body are the same; only this is true, anything else is vain.' But there are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The soul is one thing, the body another; only this is true, anything else is vain.' There are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The Tathāgata exists after death; only this is true, anything else is vain.' But there are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The Tathāgata does not exist after death; only this is true, anything else is vain.' There are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death; only this is true, anything else is vain.' But there are some ascetics and brahmins holding this doctrine, this view: 'The Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death; only this is true, anything else is vain.' They dwell quarrelling, brawling, fallen into disputes, stabbing one another with verbal daggers: 'The Dhamma is like this, the Dhamma is not like this; the Dhamma is not like this, the Dhamma is like this.'"
"Bhikkhus, the wanderers of other sects are blind, eyeless: they do not know what is beneficial, they do not know what is harmful; they do not know what is Dhamma, they do not know what is not Dhamma. Not knowing what is beneficial, not knowing what is harmful, not knowing what is Dhamma, not knowing what is not Dhamma, they dwell quarrelling, brawling, fallen into disputes, stabbing one another with verbal daggers: 'The Dhamma is like this, the Dhamma is not like this; the Dhamma is not like this, the Dhamma is like this.'"
