[157] 10. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Kosambī, in the Ghositārāma. Now on that occasion, while King Udena had gone out to his pleasure garden, the inner palace was burnt down, and five hundred women died, with Sāmāvatī at their head.
Then, in the forenoon, a number of bhikkhus, having dressed, taking their bowls and robes, entered Kosambī for alms. Having walked for alms in Kosambī, when they had returned from the almsround after the meal, they approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, while King Udena had gone out to his pleasure garden, the inner palace was burnt down, and five hundred women have died, with Sāmāvatī at their head. What, venerable sir, is the destination (gati) of those laywomen (upāsikā)? What is their future state (abhisamparāya)?"
"Bhikkhus, there are among them laywomen who are stream-enterers (sotāpannā); there are once-returners (sakadāgāminiyo); there are non-returners (anāgāminiyo). Bhikkhus, all those laywomen have died not without fruit."
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
The world, fettered by delusion (moha), appears as though it were capable;
the fool, fettered by acquisitions (upadhi), is enshrouded in darkness;
to him it appears as though eternal; for one who sees, there is nothing.

There are two on Bhaddiya; likewise there are two on those attached to sensual pleasures;
Lakuṇṭha, the Destruction of Craving (taṇhākkhaya), and the Destruction of Proliferation (papañcakkhaya);
Kaccāna, the Well (Udapāna), and Udena.
