[201] This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, one dhamma, developed (bhāvita) and cultivated (bahulīkata), secures and maintains both benefits: the benefit in this very life (diṭṭhadhammika) and the benefit in the life to come (samparāyika). What is that one dhamma? Heedfulness (appamāda) in wholesome states (kusalā dhammā). This, bhikkhus, is the one dhamma which, developed and cultivated, secures and maintains both benefits: the benefit in this very life and the benefit in the life to come."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection it is said:
The wise praise heedfulness in deeds of merit (puññakiriyā);
heedful, the wise one secures both benefits —
whatever benefit there is in this very life, and whatever benefit lies in the life to come;
through the realization of the benefit the steadfast one is called "wise."
This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One — so I have heard. The Third.
