[215] 10. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of two qualities dwells in this very life abounding in happiness and joy (somanassa), and he has properly set to work for the destruction of the taints (āsava). Which two? Being stirred with a sense of urgency (saṃvega) at the occasions that should arouse urgency, and the proper striving (padhāna) of one moved by urgency. Bhikkhus, possessed of these two qualities, a bhikkhu dwells in this very life abounding in happiness and joy, and he has properly set to work for the destruction of the taints."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In that connection it is said:
"At the occasions that should arouse urgency
the wise one should indeed be stirred —
an ardent (ātāpī), prudent bhikkhu —
having examined with wisdom.
One who dwells thus, ardent,
of peaceful conduct, not restless,
devoted to serenity of mind (cetosamatha),
would attain the destruction of suffering (dukkha)."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I have heard.
The Tenth [Sutta].
The First Vagga.
Its summary (uddāna):
"The two on 'a bhikkhu'; the 'Tormenting' and the '[Not] Tormenting'; with 'the welfare of others';
the 'Ardent' and 'No Deception'; with 'Joy' — those are ten."
