[217] This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, for the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Enlightened One (sammāsambuddha), there are two teachings of the Dhamma (dhammadesanā) that occur in succession (pariyāyena). What two? 'See evil as evil' — this is the first teaching of the Dhamma. 'Having seen evil as evil, be disenchanted with it, become dispassionate toward it, be liberated from it' — this, too, is the second teaching of the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, these are the two teachings of the Dhamma of the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Enlightened One, that occur in succession."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In this connection it is said:
"Behold the utterance in succession
of the Tathāgata, the Buddha,
who has compassion for all beings:
two dhammas have been made known.
See evil, O skilful ones,
and grow dispassionate toward evil therein;
then, with minds dispassionate toward it,
you will make an end of suffering (dukkha)."
This meaning, too, was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
