[258] This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three unwholesome (akusala) thoughts (vitakka). What three? Thought connected with not being despised (anavaññatti); thought connected with gain, honor, and fame (lābha-sakkāra-siloka); and thought connected with sympathy for others (parānuddayatā). These, bhikkhus, are the three unwholesome thoughts."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In that connection this is said:
"Bound up with the wish not to be despised,
holding gain and honor in reverence,
delighting together with companions —
such a one is far from the destruction of the fetters (saṃyojana).
But whoever here, having given up sons and cattle,
marriages and acquisitions as well —
a bhikkhu such as that is capable
of touching the supreme awakening (sambodhi)."
