[261] 4. Bhikkhus, when a deva is due to pass away (cavanadhamma) from a company of devas (devakāya), five prior signs (pubbanimitta) appear for him: his garlands wither, his garments become soiled, sweat is released from his armpits, discoloration descends upon his body, and the deva takes no delight in his own divine seat. Then, bhikkhus, the devas, knowing of him, 'This young deva (devaputta) is due to pass away,' rejoice with him in three utterances: 'Go from here, good sir, to a good destination (sugati); having gone to a good destination, gain the gain that is well gained; having gained the gain that is well gained, become well established.'
