[278] 9. Bhikkhus, there are these two gifts (dāna): the gift of material things (āmisadāna) and the gift of the Dhamma (dhammadāna). Of these two gifts, bhikkhus, this is the foremost, namely, the gift of the Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, there are these two sharings (saṃvibhāga): the sharing of material things and the sharing of the Dhamma. Of these two sharings, bhikkhus, this is the foremost, namely, the sharing of the Dhamma.
Bhikkhus, there are these two kinds of assistance (anuggaha): assistance with material things and assistance with the Dhamma. Of these two kinds of assistance, bhikkhus, this is the foremost, namely, assistance with the Dhamma.
That gift which they call supreme and unsurpassed,
that sharing which the Blessed One has extolled —
confident in mind toward the foremost field,
what wise person, understanding, would not make an offering at the proper time?
Those who speak it and those who hear it — both —
with minds of confidence in the teaching of the Sublime One (Sugata),
for them that supreme benefit is purified —
those who are heedful in the Sublime One's teaching.
