[288] 9. Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhus are deceitful (kuhā), obdurate (thaddhā), flatterers (lapā), wily ("horned," siṅgī), haughty (unnaḷā), and unconcentrated (asamāhitā) — bhikkhus, those bhikkhus are no followers of mine (māmakā). Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus have departed from this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya), and they do not attain growth, increase, and abundance in this Dhamma and Discipline. But, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who are undeceitful, free from flattery, wise (dhīrā), not obdurate, and well concentrated — bhikkhus, those bhikkhus are indeed followers of mine. Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus have not departed from this Dhamma and Discipline, and in this Dhamma and Discipline they attain growth, increase, and abundance.
The deceitful, the obdurate, the flatterers, the wily,
the haughty, the unconcentrated —
they do not grow in the Dhamma
taught by the Fully Self-Enlightened One.
The undeceitful, those free from flattery, the wise,
not obdurate, well concentrated —
they truly grow in the Dhamma
taught by the Fully Self-Enlightened One.
