[301] Then Kasibhāradvāja the brahmin, stirred with a sense of urgency (saṃvigga), his hair standing on end, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he prostrated himself with his head at the Blessed One's feet and said this to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the path to one who is lost, or hold up an oil-lamp in the darkness, thinking, 'Those who have eyes will see forms' — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. I go for refuge (saraṇa) to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts. May I receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of Master Gotama; may I receive the full ordination (upasampadā)."
And Kasibhāradvāja the brahmin received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; he received the full ordination. Not long after his full ordination, the Venerable Bhāradvāja — dwelling alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute — before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life for the sake of which sons of good family rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness; and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He knew directly: "Destroyed is birth (jāti); the holy life has been lived; what was to be done has been done; there is no more for this state of being." And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
