[305] 7. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Then, in the morning, the Blessed One, having dressed, took bowl and robe and entered Sāvatthī for alms. Now on that occasion, in the residence of the brahmin Aggikabhāradvāja, the fire was blazing and the oblation (āhuti) had been held aloft. Then the Blessed One, walking for alms on an uninterrupted round (sapadāna) through Sāvatthī, approached the residence of the brahmin Aggikabhāradvāja. The brahmin Aggikabhāradvāja saw the Blessed One coming from afar; on seeing him, he said this to the Blessed One: "Stop right there, you shaveling! Right there, you wretched ascetic! Right there, you outcaste (vasala)!"
When this was said, the Blessed One said this to the brahmin Aggikabhāradvāja: "But do you know, brahmin, an outcaste, or the things that make one an outcaste?" "Master Gotama, I do not know an outcaste or the things that make one an outcaste. It would be good if Master Gotama would teach me the Dhamma in such a way that I might know an outcaste and the things that make one an outcaste." "Then listen, brahmin, and attend carefully; I will speak." "Yes, sir," the brahmin Aggikabhāradvāja replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
