[320] "Lust (rāga) and hatred (dosa) — where do they have their source?
Discontent, delight, and terror — from where are they born?
Having arisen from where do thoughts toss up the mind (mano),
as boys toss up a crow?"
[The Blessed One:]
"Lust and hatred have their source here;
discontent, delight, and terror are born from here;
having arisen from here, thoughts toss up the mind,
as boys toss up a crow.
Born of affection, sprung up from oneself,
like the trunk-born shoots of the banyan tree,
manifold, they cling to sensual pleasures,
like a māluvā creeper spread through the forest.
Those who understand it — the source from which it arises —
they dispel it. Listen, yakkha!
They cross this flood (ogha), so hard to cross,
never crossed before, for no renewed existence."
