[379] Then the Blessed One, having expressed his appreciation to Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila) with these verses, rose from his seat and departed. Then the Venerable Sela together with his assembly, dwelling alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He directly knew: "Destroyed is birth (jāti), the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done; there is no more of this state of being." And the Venerable Sela together with his assembly became one of the arahants. Then the Venerable Sela together with his assembly approached the Blessed One; having approached, he arranged his robe over one shoulder, and extending his joined palms in reverence toward the Blessed One, he addressed the Blessed One in verse: "It was eight days ago, O One with Vision (cakkhumā), that we came to you for refuge; within seven nights, O Blessed One, we have been tamed in your teaching. You are the Buddha, you are the Teacher, you are the sage (muni) who overcame Māra; having cut off the latent tendencies (anusaya), you have crossed over, and you lead this generation across. The acquisitions (upadhi) have been transcended by you, the taints (āsava) have been shattered by you; you are a lion free from clinging, with fear and dread abandoned. These three hundred bhikkhus stand with joined palms raised: stretch forth your feet, O Hero — let the nāgas venerate the Teacher's feet." The Sela Sutta, the seventh. In the Suttanipāta, the third chapter, the Great Chapter (Mahāvagga): the eighth discourse, the Salla Sutta.
