[39] 2. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Uruvelā, on the bank of the river Nerañjarā, at the foot of the Bodhi tree, newly fully awakened. Now on that occasion the Blessed One had been sitting for seven days in a single cross-legged posture, experiencing the bliss of liberation (vimuttisukha). Then, with the passing of those seven days, the Blessed One emerged from that concentration (samādhi) and, during the middle watch of the night, gave careful attention to dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda) in reverse order (paṭiloma), thus: "When this is not, that is not; from the cessation (nirodha) of this, that ceases — that is: from the cessation of ignorance (avijjā) comes the cessation of volitional formations (saṅkhārā); from the cessation of volitional formations, the cessation of consciousness (viññāṇa); from the cessation of consciousness, the cessation of name-and-form (nāmarūpa); from the cessation of name-and-form, the cessation of the six sense bases (saḷāyatana); from the cessation of the six sense bases, the cessation of contact (phassa); from the cessation of contact, the cessation of feeling (vedanā); from the cessation of feeling, the cessation of craving (taṇhā); from the cessation of craving, the cessation of clinging (upādāna); from the cessation of clinging, the cessation of existence (bhava); from the cessation of existence, the cessation of birth (jāti); from the cessation of birth, aging and death (jarāmaraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair cease. Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering (dukkha)."
Then, having understood this matter, the Blessed One at that time uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
When indeed dhammas become manifest
to the ardent (ātāpī), meditating brahmin,
then all his doubts vanish,
since he has understood the ending of conditions (paccaya).
