[42] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Sāriputta, the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, the Venerable Mahākassapa, the Venerable Mahākaccāna, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita, the Venerable Mahākappina, the Venerable Mahācunda, the Venerable Anuruddha, the Venerable Revata, and the Venerable Nanda approached the Blessed One. The Blessed One saw those venerable ones coming while still far off; having seen them, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, these brahmins (brāhmaṇā) are coming! Bhikkhus, these brahmins are coming!"
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu of brahmin birth said this to the Blessed One: "In what way, venerable sir, is one a brahmin? And what are the things that make one a brahmin?"
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Having banished evil things, those who fare ever mindful (sadā satā),
awakened, their fetters (saññojana) destroyed —
they truly are the brahmins in the world."
