[44] 7. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Pāvā,¹ at the Ajakalāpaka Shrine (cetiya), the abode of the yakkha Ajakalāpaka. Now on that occasion the Blessed One was seated in the open air in the blinding darkness of the night, while the deva drizzled down rain drop by drop. Then the yakkha Ajakalāpaka, desiring to arouse fear, terror, and horripilation in the Blessed One, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, not far from the Blessed One he three times made the din "Akkulo! Pakkulo!"—the akkula-pakkula uproar—[saying,] "That, ascetic, is a goblin (pisāca) for you!"
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"When in regard to his own dhammas
a brahmin has gone to the far shore,
then thus does he pass beyond
this goblin and the pakkula-cry."
