[74] Then the Blessed One, having dwelt at Sāvatthī for as long as he wished, set out on tour toward Vesālī, and wandering on tour by stages, he arrived at Vesālī. There the Blessed One dwelt at Vesālī, in the Great Wood (Mahāvana), at the Hall with the Peaked Roof (Kūṭāgārasālā). Then the Blessed One, having attended to the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the river Vaggumudā, encompassing their minds with his own mind, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, that quarter seems to me as though light had arisen; Ānanda, that quarter seems to me as though radiance had arisen — the quarter in which the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the Vaggumudā are staying; it is not disagreeable to me to go there, nor to turn attention there. Ānanda, you should send a messenger into the presence of the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the Vaggumudā, saying: 'The Teacher summons the venerable ones; the Teacher desires to see the venerable ones.'" "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One; and he approached a certain bhikkhu, and having approached, he said this to that bhikkhu: "Come, friend, go to the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the Vaggumudā, and having approached, say to the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the Vaggumudā: 'The Teacher summons the venerable ones; the Teacher desires to see the venerable ones.'" "Yes, friend," that bhikkhu replied to the Venerable Ānanda; and just as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm or bend back his outstretched arm, even so he vanished from the Hall with the Peaked Roof in the Great Wood and appeared before those bhikkhus on the bank of the river Vaggumudā. Then that bhikkhu said this to the bhikkhus dwelling on the bank of the Vaggumudā: "The Teacher summons the venerable ones; the Teacher desires to see the venerable ones." "Yes, friend," those bhikkhus replied to that bhikkhu; and having set their lodgings in order and taken their bowls and robes, just as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm or bend back his outstretched arm, even so they vanished from the bank of the river Vaggumudā and appeared face to face with the Blessed One at the Hall with the Peaked Roof in the Great Wood.
