[79] 7. Thus have I heard.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana (the Bamboo Grove), at the Kalandakanivāpa (the Squirrels' Feeding Ground). Now at that time the Venerable Mahākassapa was dwelling in the Pipphali Cave (Pipphaliguhā), seated for seven days in a single cross-legged posture, having attained a certain concentration (samādhi). Then, with the passing of those seven days, the Venerable Mahākassapa emerged from that concentration. Then, when the Venerable Mahākassapa had emerged from that concentration, this thought occurred to him: "Suppose I were to enter Rājagaha for alms." Now at that time some five hundred deities (devatā) had become eagerly intent upon the Venerable Mahākassapa's obtaining almsfood (piṇḍapāta). Then the Venerable Mahākassapa, having refused those five hundred deities, dressed in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms.
