[91] 3. Thus have I heard.
On one occasion the Blessed One was wandering on tour among the Kosalans together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Then the Blessed One, turning aside from the road, approached the foot of a certain tree; having approached, he sat down on a seat that had been prepared. Then a certain cowherd approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. As that cowherd sat to one side, the Blessed One instructed, encouraged, roused, and gladdened him with a talk on the Dhamma (dhammī kathā). Then that cowherd — instructed, encouraged, roused, and gladdened by the Blessed One's talk on the Dhamma — said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, consent to accept my meal for tomorrow." The Blessed One consented by silence. Then that cowherd, having understood the Blessed One's consent, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping his right side towards him, and departed. Then, when that night had passed, that cowherd, having had abundant milk-rice with little water (appodakapāyāsa) and fresh ghee prepared in his own residence, announced the time to the Blessed One: "It is time, venerable sir; the meal is ready." Then the Blessed One, having dressed in the morning and taken his bowl and robe, approached the residence of that cowherd together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Then the cowherd with his own hands served and satisfied the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with milk-rice with little water and with fresh ghee. Then, when the Blessed One had finished his meal and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, that cowherd took a certain low seat and sat down to one side. As that cowherd sat to one side, the Blessed One, having instructed, encouraged, roused, and gladdened him with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat and departed.
