[291] 4. I have seen lay followers (upāsakā) who bear the Dhamma (dhammadharā), saying, "Sensual pleasures (kāmā) are impermanent (aniccā)"; yet they are passionately enamored of jeweled earrings, and full of longing for their children and wives. Since assuredly they do not know the Dhamma — even though they say, "Sensual pleasures are impermanent" — and they have no strength to cut off their lust (rāga), therefore they cling to children, wives, and wealth. The Elder Isidinna.
