[367] 2. Free from anger, bearing no grudge,
undeceitful, rid of slander —
truly such a bhikkhu,
thus, when he has passed on, does not sorrow.
Free from anger, bearing no grudge,
undeceitful, rid of slander —
a bhikkhu with doors ever guarded,
thus, when he has passed on, does not sorrow.
Free from anger, bearing no grudge,
undeceitful, rid of slander —
the bhikkhu who is of good virtue (kalyāṇasīla),
thus, when he has passed on, does not sorrow.
Free from anger, bearing no grudge,
undeceitful, rid of slander —
the bhikkhu who has good friends (kalyāṇamitta),
thus, when he has passed on, does not sorrow.
Free from anger, bearing no grudge,
undeceitful, rid of slander —
the bhikkhu who is of good wisdom (kalyāṇapañña),
thus, when he has passed on, does not sorrow.
He whose faith (saddhā) in the Tathāgata
is unshaken and well established,
and whose virtue is good,
dear to the noble ones and praised;
who has confidence (pasāda) in the Saṅgha,
and vision (dassana) that has become straight —
of him they say, "He is not poor";
his life is not in vain.
Therefore, to faith and to virtue,
to confidence and to vision of the Dhamma,
let the wise one devote himself,
remembering the teaching (sāsana) of the Buddhas.
