[1540] Life's span flies swiftly past; the moment does likewise;
there is no station that endures; beings pass away;
the body, unenduring, wears away —
O Udayā, do not be heedless (pamāda); practice the Dhamma.
Should the entire earth, full of riches,
belong to one alone, subject to no other,
even that must he leave behind who is not yet free from lust —
O Udayā, do not be heedless; practice the Dhamma.
Mother and father, brothers and sisters,
wife and husband, together with wealth —
even they forsake one another —
O Udayā, do not be heedless; practice the Dhamma.
Knowing that the body is food for others,
and knowing that both the good destination and the bad destination
in saṃsāra (saṃsāra) are but a brief dwelling —
O Udayā, do not be heedless; practice the Dhamma.
