[2052] "Maṇḍabya, you are a fool of little wisdom,
you who are unskilled with regard to fields of merit (puññakkhetta):
you give gifts (dāna) to those of great stains (kasāva),
to those of defiled deeds, unrestrained.
Their hair hangs in matted locks, they are clad in antelope hides,
their mouths overgrown like an old, ruined well;
behold this folk of wretched appearance —
matted hair and hide do not protect one of little wisdom.
Those in whom lust (rāga), hatred (dosa), and ignorance (avijjā) have been expunged,
arahants whose taints (āsava) are destroyed —
a gift given to them bears great fruit."
