[2341] The hunter, that doer of evil deeds, dug a pit
and covered it over with planks; placing himself and his bow within,
he struck with a great shaft
the elephant (nāga) that had come alongside.
And the elephant, pierced, uttered a dreadful trumpeting cry,
and all the elephants trumpeted dreadfully;
making grass and wood resound,
they ran in the eight directions all around.
Groping [for him] with the thought, "I shall kill him,"
the great elephant beheld the ochre robe (kāsāva), the banner of seers (isi);
in him, though touched by suffering (dukkha), there arose the perception (saññā):
"The banner of the arahants is one the good must never harm."
