[2384] "Surrounded by your ministers, you dwell upon the wealth-bearing earth (vasundharā),
whose circuit is the ocean, ringed by the sea as by an earring.
Lord of the four quarters, holder of a great realm, victorious and great in might,
you are the sole king upon the earth; your glory has attained abundance.
Sixteen thousand women, decked with jeweled earrings,
women from many lands, beautiful as celestial maidens (devakaññā), are yours.
Such a life — complete in every element, abounding in every object of desire —
so long a life, they say, O khattiya, is dear to those who are happy.
Why then, for what reason, or indeed on what ground,
do you, protecting the sage, give up your life, so hard to give up?"
