Hear this, O Pañcālas — the utterance of Cūḷaneyya:

guarding the sage, he gives up his life, so hard to give up;
of his mother, of his wife, and of his brother,
of his friend, and of the brahmin,
and even of himself — the Pañcāla gives up the life of these six.
So great in power¹ is wisdom (paññā), subtle, devising what is good,
for welfare and benefit in this present life
and for happiness in the life to come.
