Whoever here is restrained in body and in speech,
and with the mind does no evil whatsoever,
who speaks no falsehood for his own sake —
one of such a kind they call virtuous (sīlavā).
Pondering with his mind a profound question,
he does no cruel deed fraught with harm,
nor neglects the matter of benefit that has come in its due season —
one of such a kind they call wise (paññavā).
Whoever indeed is grateful, thankful, and wise,
is a good friend and staunch in devotion,
and conscientiously does what must be done for one in distress —
one of such a kind they call a true person (sappurisa).
One endowed with all these qualities together —
faithful, gentle, given to sharing, heedful of entreaties —
such a one, who lends support, congenial, of gentle speech,
Sirī (fortune) never forsakes.
