[972] Just as a man with a knife, [set] to a bael fruit (bellaṃ) of hard rind, makes it bitter even by leaving it untouched, while, paring [the rind] away, he makes it good [to eat], O king, but, cutting away [even the flesh] that thinly adheres, he would make it bad —
