As one who, without going to battle,
is defeated without even fighting,
even so, O brahmin, are you
defeated without even having gone.
If, brahmin, you will not bring me
a male slave or a female slave,
then know this, brahmin:
I shall not stay in your house;
I shall do what is disagreeable to you,
and that will be suffering (dukkha) for you.
At festival time, at the beginnings of the seasons,
when you see me finely adorned,
making merry with other men —
that will be suffering for you.
And as you, grown old, lament
at not seeing me, brahmin,
your body will grow yet more bent,
and your gray hairs will be many.
